neering, John retired from the city to take a job with one of the code writing organizations where he had been a board member, president, treasurer, and chairman of various committees. That company was IAPMO, International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials where he worked as an employee for 10 years. John was the type of man of whom you did not want to ask a question if you did not have time for the answer, because if he did not know, he
would find a resource, and lock-it' up for you immediately. John had a wide range of interests and hobbies, including but not limited to computer programming and correspondence, building sailboats (both models and life size small ones), building radio sets, clocks, planes and gliders from model kits. His favorite hobby was the design and building of tiny steam engines on his lathe. He put down about 400 feet of track in his back yard, on which to run one of his model locomotives. He also built himself a telescope for astronomy. For several years John was active in the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Lancaster, Littlerock Chamber of Commerce, and Friends of the Littlerock Library, and sat on all those boards at times during the past 10 years. He also attended the Juniper Hills Book Club. He especially enjoyed the friends he met at all those different organizations. John was a frequent contributor of articles for the Little-rock Chamber Newsletter, with a unique flare for writing humorously. His reading was extensive and interests broad. He read the daily news, many magazines, both technical and political, from many angles, and his Kindle e-library went everywhere with him. It was crammed with an array of technical knowledge, as well as fiction. John was living proof that being an elder does not necessarily mean passively observing the life around one. He was an active vital part of his community, with an irresistible sense of humor, and with an avid interest in being informed. All those who knew him will miss him sorely. John is survived by his wife, Loretta Taylor Meacham, four sons and a daughter with the late Elsie Woodhead Meacham; John W. Meacham and wife Sally; Roy A. Meacham; Thomas B. Meacham and wife, Aida; Evelynn Meacham Burnette and husband Nolan; Robert M. Meacham; 12 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Following several months of illness at home, John William Meacham took his final journey on Wednesday, October 7, 2010, after a brief stay at AV Hospital. Born in Los Angeles, July 2, 1925, to Roy Alman Meacham and Dorothy Warren Morrison Meacham, John remained in LA County for the remainder of his life with the exception of 3 years in the 1940's when he had a mysterious address in Europe where he served with Ration's army during World War II. He was 85 years old at the time of death and a resident of Littlerock, Calif. John's work history includes 33 years with the City of Los Angeles starting as an Assistant Electrical Tester with the Department of Water and Power. Constantly educating himself he became a licensed Professional Engineer. He helped design the Scattergood power generating plant and eventually became the Division Chief of the Mechanical Research Division of Building and Safety. During much of this time John was active in various organizations involved in development of building, mechanical, and plumbing codes and safety concerns. He was elected to the Casualty Council of Underwriter's Laboratories and several other code and standards development organizations.
